BUGANDA KINGDOM
Buganda kingdom was located along the shores of Lake Victoria in the interlacustrine region. It was a highly centralized monarchy that came into existence after the collapse of vastly expanded Bunyoro-Kitara kingdom in 17th century. It was believed that the founder of Buganda kingdom was Kato Kimera, the brother of Isingoma Rukidi Mpuga, the founder of Luo-Babito dynasty.
The kings of Buganda took the title KABAKA. It was Kabaka Mwanga in the early 18th century who put Buganda firmly on the road to strong, centralized kingship.
The economy of Buganda was based on its agriculture, and herein lay its strength. The main agricultural crop in Buganda was the banana and its relative the plantain: grown as a starchy vegetable food rather than a fruit.
