The term ‘history’ originates from the Greek word ‘historia’ which means to Question or to Ask; to search or inquire for the truth and
then report the findings.
History is defined as the study of the past and present human activities.
History it covers all aspects of human society. Political, social, economic, scientific, technological, medical, cultural, intellectual, religious and military developments are all part of history.
Oral traditions refer to historical information that is handed down by the words of mouth, usually by elders from one generation to another.
One of the popular source of history is Oral Traditions.
What is Oral Traditions
Oral Traditions refer to historical information that is handed down by the words of mouth, usually by elders from one generation to another.
The famous historians who used this source in writing their works in Africa were, Jan Vansina and Isaria Kimambo
Types of Oral Traditions.
There are two types of oral traditions:
A. Cultural practices
B. Narration of past events.
a. Cultural practices
We can obtain historical information through cultural practices such as art, religion, music, jokes, riddles, proverbs, poems and superstitions.
b. Narration of past events.
Historical information can also be obtained through story telling or narration of past events by the narrator. The narrations can be in the form of epics, fable, tales and myths.
Advantages of Oral tradition.
i. Oral traditions help us to get first-hand information that may not be obtained from other sources. E.g an old man who participated in Majimaji war can give us an eye witness account that can not be obtained through other sources.
ii. Oral traditions are easy to learn and remember. Oral traditions can be passed on easily from one generation to another.
iii. Oral traditions collect and pass on historical information to both illiterate and literate people as they only need to be listened to.
iv. They are a livelier source of historical information, since they involve physical interaction.
v. Oral traditions are used to entertain people by way of stories and riddles.
vi. Oral traditions are entertaining. They combine enjoyment and learning.
vii. Oral traditions supplement other sources of history.
