IMPACTS OF THE GERMAN DIRECT RULE IN AFRICA

IMPACTS OF THE DIRECT RULE

The Germans direct rule affected the Africans in different ways, social, economically and politically.

ECONOMIC IMPACT

Loss of land and other properties. The Africans were evacuated from their rich fertile land. Eg. In Lukuledi, Mahenge, Rufiji etc. in German East Africa, they also lost their properties such as cattle, homesteads during the fighting.

Transformation of native’s economic culture: This situation forced African to be hired (employed) as laborers after being evacuated from their usual (local) areas (land). Others learnt how to become cash crop producers etc.

Exploitation of African resources: The German colonial government employed much force to put the natives under their (Germans’) wishes for example Akida and Jumbes, despite of its productivity. The Africans were paid a little amount of money as wages. In so doing, they exploited the native labor cheaply. Also, they didn’t exploit the raw materials from land and so on. E.g. Minerals, crops etc.

SOCIAL IMPACTS

Tribulations: The native were very much tortured by the colonial government. They were whipped, jailed, given hard work and sometimes killed in various colonial operations.

Insecurity: The natives lived under the shadow of death due to the German intention in controlling the natives who happened to be stubborn were tortured, killed or jailed.

POLITICAL IMPACT

Loss of the native leader’s sovereignty. The native local rulers lost the political influence to the ruled class.

Wars. Direct rule motivated African large scale fighting such as the Maji maji uprising in German East Africa {Tanganyika}, Nama and Herero war in German South West Africa {Namibia}.
