PHYSICS FORM 2: TOPIC 5 - SIMPLE MACHINES

SIMPLE MACHINES

➢ This is any device which can simplify work.

OR

➢ This is any device that requires the application of a single force to do work.

Machines help us to move objects closer, apart or to raise them to different levels by:

1. Increasing the applied force as exhibited in crowbars

2. By changing the direction of force of the force for example in pulley.

3. By transforming energy from one form to another. A generator is a god example of such machine.

4. Transferring energy from one place to another, as in the case of a car engine.

5. Multiplying speed, as in the case of bicycles.

KINDS OF MACHINES

There are two kinds of machine. These are

1) Simple machines

✓ Examples; Inclined plane, the screw, the lever, wheel and axle, knife e.t.c

2) Compound/complex machines

✓ Examples; Computer, photocopy machines, printer, calculator, airplane, e.t.c

TERMS USED IN SIMPLE MACHINES

1. EFFORT (E)

➢ This is a force applied in a moving load

o SI – Unit of effort is Newton (N)

2. LOAD (L)

➢ This is the mass being moved by a simple machine.

o SI – Unit of load is Newton.

3. MECHANICAL ADVANTAGES (M.A)

➢ This is the ratio of the load moved to the effort applied

OR

➢ This is the ratio of the output force (load) to the input force (effort).
