Is the teaching of morality viable? Or can morality be taught?
There two points to answer this question; it is viable because:
1. Teaching of morality starts at home. Parents and other members of community do teach morality in order to ensure stable society.
For teaching morality to take place, it requires appropriate nurturing. It is a sociological term to teach morality which is the process known as socialization.
To initiate a child into the realm of moral values considered important by the entire society is what we do in socialization.
Moral values include:
i. Social responsibility i.e. gender roles
ii. Job orientation
iii. Spiritual and moral values; when you go to the church you are exposed to moral values.
Generally morality is a subject embedded in the family curriculum because what is taking place at home is in such framework as curriculum.
2. Education institutions provide useful evidences of moral values. Morality is conveyed in schools, colleges, and universities.
The teaching of morality comes into two forms:
i) teaching of morality involves people who are expected to teach ethics or ethical practice which are so important for professional undertaking. E.g. student teachers who are doing educational program are taught ethics so as to be ethical mould and morally upright.
ii) Morality is also taught in religious institutions.
These institutions play a crucial role in influencing people’s characters. For example, some people live a good life because of the religious teachings.
The teachings contribute to moral practicing.
3. On community i.e. religious institutions.
Religious teachings play role in shaping people’s behaviors. Morality is a curriculum in the religious institutions.
