THE CHARTERED COMPANIES IN EAST AFRICA


The German East Africa Company (G.E.A.Co)


It was founded by Karl peters in 1884. Formally it was known as society for German colonization. The G.E.A.Co was provided the Imperial charter by chancellor Otto Von Bismarck. It was mandated to establish colonial rule in German East Africa (Tanganyika).the G.E.A.Co arranged the Anglo – German agreements of 1886 and 1890.


The Imperial British East Africa Company (I.B.E.A.Co)


It was founded by Sir William MacKinnon in 1886. It was mandated to extend British rule in British East Africa (Kenya), Uganda and later Zanzibar.


IN WEST AFRICA


The Royal Niger Company (R.N.C.)


It was formed by Sir George Tubman Goldie in 1884. Royal Niger Company was initiated by joining the British firms on the Niger basin with the British Central Africa Company. In 1886, it was chartered by the British government to administrate in Nigeria. 


It participated in the partition of Africa and organized the Anglo – French declaration of 1890 which allowed the British to take over the SOKOTO caliphates. The French took Senegal and Algeria.


IN SOUTHERN AFRICA


The British South Africa Company (B.S.A.Co)


It was founded by Cecil Rhodes the controller of “De Beers Company” in 1889. In 1889 it was provided the Imperial charter “Royal charter” and empowered to administrate in Southern Rhodesia.


B.S.A.Co secured treaties in Mashonaland and Nyasaland it organized the Anglo– Portuguese agreements in 1890/91, also the company built a railway line from South Africa to Central Africa.


By using its finance, the B.S.A.Co suppressed African resistance in Zimbabwe “Southern Rhodesia” in 1890s. In 1897 the British government terminated its imperial charter. The company was also ruled by Sir Charles Rudd.
