THE SIMILARITIES BETWEEN THE   INDIRECT RULE ASSIMILATION SYSTEMS


Ambition over raw material, markets, cheap labor and investment areas. Despite having different systems, all Europeans longed for these demands.


Existence of the state apparati: Such as the police force, the courts, the soldiers and others so as to control the colonies.


Exploitation: Under all systems the Africans experienced colonial taxation, forced labor, low wages, land alienation etc.


Colonial social oppression: In all systems the natives were subject to poor education, health, water, housing and other social services.


Politically: Under all systems the natives were subjected to the European top authorities of the governing regional commission and so on.


COMPARISON BETWEEN ASSIMILATION POLICY AND POLICY OF ASSOCIATION


Assimilation aimed at assimilating Africans into becoming cultural French men regardless of their color. Association did not concentrating at turning Africans into cultural Frenchmen.


Assimilated Africans had the right to vote.


Under Association, Voting for French Parliament in Paris was not encouraged. It was for customary leaders.


Under Assimilation policy, the assimilated had some qualification to be met by Africans in order to qualify to become French citizen. Under Association, the question of French citizenship was ignored because the issue was of mutual assistance with Africans.


Assimilation policy involved total rejection of African personality and culture. Association system recognized and respected African personality and culture.


Under Assimilation system, District and village chiefs were appointed by French administrators. Under Association system, District and village chiefs were elected by indigenous people.


Ability to speak French was emphasized under Assimilation system. Association system respected local language. 


Under Assimilation system, African customary laws were marginalized. Under Assimilation system, African customary laws were respected.


The Assimilation system covered small area as well as population of urban areas such as towns as Dakar, Goree, Saint Louis, Rufisque and others. The Association system covered vast area of West Africa, central Africa, Madagascar, Djibouti and Others.
