What is Museum?


A museum is a building in which historical artefacts and other objects of artistic, cultural or scientific importance are kept and shown to the public.

Museums are places or buildings where historical information and objects are preserved. Museums contain items which show cultural, social, political, religious, economic and technological development from the earliest time to the present. Objects that are preserved are like coins, clothes, minerals, cowries, religious and ceremonial symbols.



Types of museums


Museums can be national, regional, districts and village.


In Tanzania we have a national museum in Dar es salaam.


Tanzania has also regional museums such as Bagamoyo, Butiama, Musoma, Kalenga in Iringa, Songea in Ruvuma, Arusha declaration museum in Arusha, Bujora (Sukuma museum in Kisesa), House of Wonders in Zanzibar.


Functions of museum


i. Preserve historical documents and objects


ii. To collect artefacts from different regions and sources


iii. It is the place for tourists and study tours.


iv. It is the center for cultural and national identity.


v. Museum play an educate role in the society i.e museum function as a centre of Education.


vi. Museums are a source of living history.
